Start your walk by staying in the actual Book Room where Samuel Coleridge and William Wordsworth spent time What better way to savour the moment and set the scene for the Coleridge Way Walk.
The Coleridge way is a beautiful 36 mile walking route through the stunning Somerset countryside of the Quantock Hills, the Brendon Hills and Exmoor, a landscape that inspired Coleridge to produce some of his best known work. Since 2014 the walk has been extended to Lynton & Lynmouth, a distance of approximately 56 miles.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge visited The Old House while his family lived here, making our Coleridge Suite the perfect place from which to commence your journey in the foot steps of the great poet.
Departing from Nether Stowey at the foot of the Quantocks where Coleridge lived for three years, follow the trail:
- From the village travel through the quiet and unspoilt northern fringes of the Quantock Hills through the villages of Holford, West Quantoxhead and Bicknoller.
- On the next stage follow the route across the little known Brendon Hills, through the villages of Monksilver, Roadwater and Luxborough and across Lype Hill to Wheddon Cross.
- The next day will take you to the remote Exmoor moorland fringes of Dunkery Hill and onto the woodland village of Horner.
- To reach your final destination of Porlock you take the spectacular South West Coastal Path.
You will travel through a variety of landscapes: heathland, moorland, deciduous & coniferous woodland, farmland, deeply wooded valleys and historic villages with expansive views over to the North Somerset Coast and Wales.
